PROTOCOL FOR STOPPAGE OF THE RACE

When any reason occurs to suspend the race in connection with calamities (f.i. thunderstorm) then holds the following protocol.

By approach of badly weather on seven positions on the course officials are posted with walkie-talkies in connection with the racedirector, who is at that moment near to the speaker.

When necessarily the racedirector gives the signal for interruption by walkie-talkie and the speaker makes this immediately known by the speaker installation.

The officials on the seven positions do the following:
- All participants become stopped;
- Start numbers are recorded (when possible) (paper, pencil);
- Participants become send to the nearest shelter.
(Space is approximately 250 meters; Number of participants on average 30);
- Bring themselves in safety;
- Hand over the number of participants to the racedirector.

To result of affairs the racedirector determines how long the interruption lasts. Time from signal till stoppers and duration, a multiple counts of ten ten minutes. Becomes kept up per chronometer through the racedirector.

Ten minutes before the determined moment of restart the participants become called up to their point of stopping. (At start/finish of relay-teams the next runner.) The officials check the starting numbers (control is number of participants). Two minutes before the restart, the racedirector checks the positions with the walkie-talkie. When not all participants are present the restart normally goes through. At restart the participants start all in the same time from the point of stopping (maximum advantage 200 meters). The start signal is given with walkie-talkie and the speaker installation.

The time of interruption becomes added after 14:00 hour on Saturday. Exception on that takes place when the interruption is in the last hour. The race is ended then.

MEDICAL TEAM ADVICE

ADVICES CONCERNING FOOD DURING THE 24 HOURS RUN/ RELAY

- In order to build a large energy reserve it is wise to reduce your training for the last three days before the run and to eat "lots" to build up the glucogene;

- "Lots" especially means food containing carbohydrates like potatoes, bread, paste, rice, pizza, juice and bananas;

- Avoid snacks containing much fat as much as possible. During the run you have to drink enough, about 1 to 2 pints an hour depending on the weather circumstances. Be careful with drinking of sports drinks. Drinking too much or in a wrong proportion may upset your stomach

- Participants in a relay team are recommended to eat a little during every pause, for instance half a sandwich with honey, a banana or a muesli bar.

GENERAL CARE

- In general: Don't underestimate the 24 hours! Make sure you are in excellent shape and prepare yourself as best you can.

- Besides warming up it is also very important to cool down after each effort. You will find exercises to warm up and cool down properly on the page after the next.

- Take enough dry clothes along with you, including socks. Be aware of various weather circumstances and temperatures: adapting to temperature, wind and humidity is very important. In rainy weather and at low temperatures (under ± 15° C) you may use vaseline.

- Don't use massage products which contain substances for a better blood circulation. By using these products you run the risk of cooling down too much, possibly leading to haemorrhages.

- If you suspect an inury don't just take a massage but HAVE IT CHECKED!

- With regard to your own companions: In any doubt always consult the medical team. Help given by the layman or the inexperienced might lead to serious damage to an athlete.

- Small injuries such as skin wounds, blisters, etc. will be treated by the first aid team. This team is not situated in the sports hall but next to the track.

- Heavily injured athletes must consult the medical team, accompanied by a companion, if they suspect that they cannot continue the run.

The medical team can only be consulted by the athletes in the sports hall because of treatment tables and medical equipment being present there only. Only in cases of emergency the medical team will come to the track. In these cases the team must be alerted through the racing management office and using a walkie-talkie.

Lots of success!

The medical team, headed by Geurt vd Kraats, physician.
